As before, you are Pac-Man and you are in a maze with dots, power pellets and hosts. Pac-Man is at its best when you’re presented with a bunch of options and have to make a split-second decision on which one to take. Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 is still a fun game at heart, but overall it actually feels like a backwards step from its predecessor. Pac-Man: Championship Edition is a sequel, by the same developer Tru Iwatani, done in the style of the original classic. The fact that a fairly long tutorial is needed to explain all these elements speaks volumes really. Little "cut-scenes" that play out for certain events and pointless "boss battles" etc all interrupt the flow of the gameplay without adding anything of worth and the way the ghost now move at random (rather than remaining in a train) once you collect enough pellets to eat them adds an unneeded element of luck. 90 Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 is simply an incredibly fun and addictive arcade experience that once again reinvents the arcade classic in a compelling way. Perhaps realising that they'd pretty much perfected the formula already Namco seem to have taking the kitchen sink approach to this sequel but, rather than adding to the formula, they've simply over-complicated matters.
